Four-day seminars dedicated to the works of specific directors have started in Syros since 2001.  They are presented by Platon Rivellis.  The aim of these seminars is to assist participants to an approach and understanding of the works of some great directors.  It is possible to have a seminar with various films (especially in provincial towns), one from each director. This too is helpful as participants can see the different cinematic codes.  Nevertheless the greater interest lies in the screening of many films by the same director, since participants can study his works in depth and reach a greater appreciation of them.  There is an introduction to the film before each screening and it is followed by an analysis and discussion.  Seminars begin Friday evening and end Monday mid-day.  Films have English sub-titles.

There have been, up till now, tributes to Buster Keaton, Yasujiro Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini. Tributes to many other directors have been planned and will follow, at the rate of about one a month.  (Luis Bunuel, Carl Dreyer, G.W.
